The “Underground”
For many living in metropolitan areas, the Underground is an essential part of daily life. Artificially lit, cavernous, and potentially an unsettling place, over the years it has developed a history of being somewhat unpredictable and unsafe. It is within this context that people attempt to reach their destination, making the best of a somewhat taxing experience. This work attempts to document this setting and these adaptive behaviors. It is one depiction of the Underground and the individuals who utilize it, in their private moments, making do or simply getting by. The images present examples of behavioral patterns exhibited by people throughout the world in their routine use of urban rail transportation. This portfolio serves as an exhibition presenting one, and only one, reality involving this form of transportation. It is simply a recording of experiences and is not intended to pass judgment in any way. These images are not for sale nor are they intended to be profit-generating in any way.
